sudden global blackout of facebook whatsapp instagram impacted millions of users
The famous social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, faced a massive global outage that halted the services for few hours. Facebook said that the leading cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change. However, no user data was compromised due to the blackout.
The Facebook team found that configuration changes on the routers that help network traffic between the company’s data centre caused problems that led to the blackout.
“This interruption to network traffic had an impact on the way our servers communicate, entirely stopping our services,” it added.
Facebook’s tweet said that “certain people are experiencing difficulty accessing Facebook application”, and we are working to restore it.
There were reports that few employees working at the Facebook Office at Menlo Park, California, had trouble entering buildings as their security badges stopped functioning during the social media blackout.
The blackout also affected people who needed to connect with online communities, individuals who run businesses, sign into different sites, and many who were not able to order food.
WhatsApp competitor, Telegram stated that it added 70m new users during the six-hour blackout of WhatsApp and Facebook. CEO of Telegram Pavel Durov called it a record-breaking boost in user registration and activity”.
Similarly, a significant contender, the Signal application, declared that it gained millions of users during the Facebook blackout.
