State Level Leadership On Cards For Navjot Singh Sidhu

Last updated on July 17th, 2021 at 05:09 am

Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sindhu has played his cards well, with his public jabbers. Being appointed as the Punjab Congress Chief, political mavericks feel he is going to be Captain Amarinder Singh’s successor. Mr. Singh currently is the serving Chief Minister of Punjab

His media advisor has already put speculations to rest reassuringly that the 79-year-old politician isn’t leaving the race for the next elections and will be seen holding the reigns tight in 2022.

Chief Minister position has a lot to do with MLA support to Sidhu or Singh, while the high command in the Congress is pinning hopes on the former as the future of Punjab.

As Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Chairman, Sindhu seems to be playing the card that Singh had played over High Command in 2017, where had forced himself into the PPCC seat only to be declared CM later in the weeks.

A similar pattern has followed with Kamal Nath and Bhupesh Baghel who were both the PCC Chiefs in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh respectively in 2019. That is when the states went to the polls. Both later became CMs when the party won. Kamal Nath was also made PCC Chief just before the elections replacing Arun Yadav.

Jyotiraditya Scindia had pitched to be made PCC chief and be declared as the CM face but the party chose Nath, who ultimately was also the choice of the majority of the MLAs for the CM chair too. Nath remained the PCC chief along with being CM, which led to Scindia leaving the party ultimately.

Meanwhile, Sidhu’s posters put up by his supporters in Ludhiana have been promptly ripped off, even before Congress Party has announced anything about his new role.

The power tussle within Congress has only been getting more and more bitter. Apparently, Captain Singh and his supporters are not happy with Ms. Gandhi’s decision of offering a state-level party leadership to Sidhu, who is in Delhi to discuss the decision.
