On Sunday, the single-dose Sputnik Light COVID vaccine got approval from the Drugs Controller General of India for emergency use in India.
The information was confirmed by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The step has only been taken after an expert panel of India drug control authority went through all the recommendations for the use of Sputnik Light. There are various regulatory provisions attached to it.
The Union minister took to Twitter to make the official announcement. He said, “DCGI has granted emergency use permission to single-dose Sputnik Light COVID-19 vaccine in India. This is the ninth COVID-19 vaccine in the country. “
He also said that this approval will further help India fight the war against Covid-19 pandemic. To the uninitiated, Sputnik-Light is the same as component-1 of Sputnik V.
As per information passed on by an official source, the recommendations of the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on January 21, the approval came after Dr Reddy’s Laboratories presented a proposal regarding it.
This will be a restricted emergence use of the vaccine as a booster dose against Omicron which will come along with a deep analysis of the data regarding the safety and efficacy of the vaccine manufacture in Russia. In its presentation, the firm stated that the vaccine is approved in 29 countries including Russia and Argentina and there is no need to doubt its safety. As per the available data on the efficacy, the vaccine has shown 65.4 percent efficacy against the virus.
