The Sports Ministry announced on Thursday that several athletes from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) core and development groups, including Tokyo Paralympics silver medalist Nishad Kumar and ace woman table tennis player Manika Batra, will receive financial assistance to help them prepare for upcoming competitions.
Nishad Kumar, the silver medalist at the Tokyo Paralympics who set an Asian mark of 2.06m in the T47 Men’s High Jump event, has been awarded Rs 18.9 lakh in financial aid to help him train at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. He and his physiotherapist Aalaap Jawadekar have already left for the 73-day training camp, which began on June 2 and will end on August 12.
He will train in Chula Vista under the direction of Jeremy Fischer, the center’s chief coach and director.
Table tennis players Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula, among others, have received support. While Manika received financial aid to accompany her personal coach Chris Pfeiffer to the WTT Contender Zagreb (June 13-19), Sreeja received financial assistance to compete in the WTT Feeder Otocec, Slovenia (June 20-26).
Meanwhile, Avinash Sable, a 3000m steeplechase runner who competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has been given financial support to fly to Colorado Springs, where he will race on June 5 at the Diamond League in Rabat. Sable, a member of the TOPS Core squad, will also receive help from Masseur and a Garmin GPS watch. The total amount of financial help was Rs 3.52 lakh.
Annu Rani, a Tokyo 2020 Olympics athlete, has also received financial assistance in the form of Nemeth and Nordic Valhalla javelins for Rs 4.15 lakh.
Swimmer Aneesh Gowda has been given financial help to compete in the Singapore National Swimming Championships (June 23-26), and Men’s Sabre Fencer Karan Singh has been given funding to train at the Bauer Fencing Academy Orleans, France, from June 1 to July 31.
Karan will compete in the Asian Fencing Championships in Seoul from June 10-15 and the Senior World Fencing Championships in Cairo from July 15-23, all under Christian Bauer’s watchful eye. Bhavani Devi is the only other Indian fencer in Christian Bauer’s training program.
