Sony Announces Project Q, Handheld Console To Stream PlayStation Games

Sony has announced its ‘Project Q’ which is a handheld console or device with an 8-inch screen that streams PlayStation 5 (PS5) games. It will be launched this year 2023.

The Tokyo-based company, Sony has revealed its new handheld gaming device, also called as “Project Q,” during a PlayStation Showcase live stream.

However, Project Q is not intended to compete with consoles like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck.

Instead, it will be a cloud gaming system exclusively used for PS Remote Play, requiring games to be installed on the PlayStation 5.

While details about Project Q’s capabilities, specifications, and performance are yet to be revealed, Sony confirmed that it will feature an eight-inch HD screen and include all the buttons and features found on the DualSense controller. It is still unclear how Project Q will function when not connected to Wi-Fi or streaming games from a PS5, leaving gamers curious about its offline capabilities. Sony plans to release more information about Project Q in the coming months, including pricing details.

Sony’s decision to re-enter the handheld console market with a streaming device reflects the evolving landscape of portable gaming.

Sony was once a major player in this space, but its last handheld gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, didn’t perform well, leading the company to exit the market.

In recent years, the success of the Nintendo Switch has revitalized the handheld console market, with other brands like Valve, Asus, Logitech, and Razer also introducing their own handheld gaming devices.

Sony’s approach with Project Q differs from Nintendo’s hybrid console strategy. Project Q is positioned as an accessory for the PlayStation 5, focusing on Remote Play to stream games directly from the console.

Unlike the Logitech G Cloud, it doesn’t offer cloud game streaming capabilities, nor does it have a dedicated game lineup like the Switch.

However, Project Q may provide a more immersive and optimized gaming experience with the integration of DualSense controllers, enhancing gameplay nuances.

It’s worth noting that the PS5 already offers its own remote-play feature, allowing users to play their console on laptops, computers, or smartphones.

Sony has yet to elaborate on the specific differentiating factors of Project Q, but it seems likely that the device will deliver a more tailored experience for PS Remote Play and leverage the unique features of the DualSense controller.
