Sonia Gandhi address to Bihar ahead of polling

The Congress president Sonia Gandhi took to Twitter, putting out a 5-minute video to talk about the dire situation facing Bihari voters and asking them to choose the Congress-RJD-Left alliance.

Speaking before the first phase of elections in Bihar, Congress president Sonia Gandhi called for a change in the state, saying the NDA government that has been ruling over the past 15 years is “high on power and ego” and has deviated from their path.

She said the Nitish Kumar government is neither “saying good nor doing good” and has disappointed everyone across the board – from farmers to labourers and the youth. People are suffering due to the fragile state of the economy, she said.​

She particularly highlighted the crisis faced by farmers. She also said that the Dalits and Mahadalits in the state are being destroyed and the same fate is going to befall the other backward classes.

She said the people of the state will come forward to build a ‘new Bihar’ for the next generation and for this purpose is with the Mahagathbandhan. The NDA – both at the centre and the state – has been one that has continually caused suffering through different “shutdowns” – the demonitisation, COVID-10 lockdown and economic shutdown.

Bihar is strong and has the energy but unemployment, inflation, starvation have left it incapacitated and wounded, she said. What can’t be expressed in words are being said in tears. But the government can’t be formed on the basis of fear and crime, she said.

Bihar is a mirror to India. It is the energy, faith and pride of India, she said. Bihari farmers, youth, labourers, men and women are working across India and the world. Now the same Bihar will be voting for change and for a new future. They have many questions – on unemployment, livelihood, education, health, law & order and are demanding answers, she said.

Now it was time to move from darkness to light, lies to truth and from the past to the present, she said, appealing to the voters to choose the mahagathbandhan.

She spoke about the Congress manifesto which has said it will review the prohibition in the state which is costing the government treasury much in revenue. Illegal trade of liquor was still happening and the police were benefitting from this, the manifesto said. They have also promised an allowance of Rs 1500 for unemployed youth.

It has also promised Rs 800 honorary pension for elderly and women and Rs 1000 for octogenarians. They have promised a farm loan waiver scheme and also have claimed they will regularise the jobs of contract teachers who can then avail their perks.
