Sona Mohapatra says those supporting Goswami’s bail rejection are no less than fascists. Not long ago Editor in-chief of the Republic TV, Arnab Goswami, was arrested by the police and that left people divided into two groups. One side of the group was in support of the arrest while others felt the arrest was forced.
On Monday, the bail plea filed by Goswami was turned down by the Bombay High Court stating the TV anchor must go to sessions court before coming to the High Court. But people are confused if it was the ‘right way’ he was taken into custody and whether the treatment he received from the police officials was justified or not. The second group was joined by singer Sona Mohapatra.
She tweeted saying that people in favour of the court rejecting the bail plea are no less than fascist. “All those people smacking their lips, justifying #ArnabGoswami being denied bail & being housed in a jail inhabited by terrorists & underworld goons, please know that you are no different from ‘fascists’. You endorse ‘political vendetta’. That’s sick, 2 wrongs don’t make a right,” she wrote.
On November 4, Arnab Goswami along with two others–Feroze Shaikh and Nitish Sarda– arrested in case of abetment to suiceide in 2018. The case is of architect and interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother. Both died by suicde in Alibaug.
A note left by the two revealed that this step was taken under immense pressure as he could not get dues amounting to Rs 5.40 cr by Arnab, Feroz and NItish. Even though an abetment to suicide case was filed by the Alibaug police in 2018, the case was later on closed by Raigad police.
Maharashtra home minister however tweeted in May of this year that the case will be re-investigated. Adnya Naik had complained to me that #AlibaugPolice had not investigated non-payment of dues from #ArnabGoswami’s @republic which drove her entrepreneur father & grandmom to suicide in May 2018. I’ve ordered a CID re-investigation of the case.
Last few months have seen Arnab attacking on the Maharashtra government and taking the Sushant Singh Rajput murder/suicide case into extreme tangent. The television channel however has defended Goswami’s action saying that this attack on the journalist is an attack on journalism itself.
