In an application filed in the court, the investigator Vidya Ram Diwakar said that the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri was a planned conspiracy of an attempt to murder. The court accepted several new charges raised by the SIT against MoS Ajay Mishra’s son, Ashish Mishra, and the 12 other people.
The court allowed the trial of Ashish Mishra in the IPC (Indian Penal Code) sections pertaining to planned murder in the Lakhimpur violence incident. The 13 accused are already in jail in connection with the case. However, now murder charges are leveled against them.
According to Indian Express, the new charges come at a time when Ashish Mishra’s bail application is still pending with the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court. The matter has been listed for January. After the SIT called the Lakhimpur Kheri incident a “pre-planned conspiracy”, various opposition parties including Congress and TMC accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of playing politics. They demanded the immediate removal of Union Minister Ajay Mishra.
During a farmers’ protest in Lakhimpur Kheri, eight persons were killed, including four farmers and a journalist. Ashish Mishra’s car ran over the farmer protesters in the Tikonia area, a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district. The farmers were coming back after protesting against the Centre’s three controversial farm laws. Subsequently, violence started in the area. Farmers reportedly said that supporters of Ashish Mishra shot dead one person. The Supreme Court then requested the state of Uttar Pradesh to enhance the SIT Probe in this case.
