Shreyas Iyer injures shoulder, ruled out for Ind vs Eng, IPL 2021

Mumbai-born cricketer Shreyas Iyer injured his shoulder during the first ODI against England on March 23, where India beat the English side by 66 runs. The player will now not be part of the playing squad for the rest of the matches.

Experts suggest that him not being part of the team anymore will have a serious impact on the game play. Not only this, but the 26-year-old cricketer will also have to miss the entire IPL 2021 due to this injury. Iyer captained the Delhi Capitals in the last edition of the Indian Premier League held in the UAE.

The right-handed batsman suffered an injury while fielding at the cover and while attempting to stop the ball, the athlete dived and in the process hurt himself even though he managed to protect the boundary. He landed in an awkward position which essentially resulted in him being injured. The athlete seemed to be in a lot of pain as he was being taken back to the dressing room by his teammates and physio.

When the athlete was taken for an X-ray, it was gathered that the DC captain was in no position to be a part of the remaining matches against England nor will he be able to take part in the IPL which starts from April 9.

It was revealed on Thursday by the news agency PTI that BCCi officials have said that Iyer will have to go through a surgery on his left shoulder as he is in severe pain. He has been ruled out for a minimum of four months.

The source said, “He will have to go under the knife. So, it looks not just the first part of IPL but Iyer will miss the entire IPL. It might take a minimum of four months before he can hit the nets again. He has been under severe pain.”

It will be a difficult time for the cricketer’s career especially as he had made some prior commitments. He has announced on Monday that he will be a part of the English country one-day tournament for Lancashire. But given the situation, he might have to miss out on this opportunity.

As for the IPL, he will not be leading the team this time which means that either Rishabh Pant or Australian cricketer Steve Smith may take over. Smith has had the experience of captaining the Australian side while Pant will be a new face in the IPL as a captain. The last time Pant had captained the Indian side was during the Under-19 tournament.
