The Supreme Court has recently pulled up Kerala over its ‘sorry state of affairs as it relaxed Covid-19 restrictions for three days, owing to the Bakrid festival that has India excited at the moment. It has been called, as a pressure tactic of the traders to which the government has given in.
India has been trying to recover from the sad impact of the second wave and is already facing jitters over a third more deadly wave of the Covid-19 variant. More and more instances of crowding are going to hasten the spread process, which is what the courts are now trying to control by issuing specific sealing orders.
The Supreme Court has said that it will take action against the Kerala government if relaxations granted by the state for Bakrid lead to the further spread of Covid-19. Kerala has been one of the worst-hit states in the times of Covid-19. The Supreme Court in a formal statement has said, “We direct Kerala to give heed to Article 21 read with Article 144 of the Constitution of India and follow our orders given in the Kanwar Yatra case.”
The court has already asked the Kerala government to file a response on an application against the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions in the state in view of Eid.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had announced concessions at a press conference on July 17. He said that this was being done in view of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Azha) being celebrated on July 21. Towards this, textiles, footwear shops, jewelry, fancy stores, shops selling home appliances and electronic items, all types of repairing shops and shops selling essential items shall be allowed to open on July 18-20 from 7 am to 8 pm in category A, B and C areas.
In D category areas, these shops can function only on July 19, he had said. The areas have been categorised based on test positivity rate.
