SC asks not to sensationalize the issue responding to petition on Hijab row

On demanding for an urgent review of the closure of Hijab row in Karnataka, the Supreme Court of India said that do not sensationalize the issue as per need.

On Thursday, the apex body dismissed the petitions that were seeking for urgent hearing in the case against the Karnataka High Court’s statement on the matter. The state body had asserted upholding the power of educational institutions to ban the wearing of hijabs within the premises of the facility.

The court further declined to give any specific date to hear the pleas which have been filled in many numbers. This was after a petitioner asked for urgency in the matter saying that if there is any delay, it would stop girl students from appearing for their exams.

Responding to this statement, the Chief Justice of India N V Ramana said that these calls have nothing to do with examinations and there is no need to sensationalize such things. The petitioner was represented by senior advocate Devadatt Kamat.

The senior advocate said that exams will begin from March 28 and if this continues, “One year will go. All these girls are being prevented from entering the school. Lordships may fix some dates next week.”

The Court did not waste much time in declaring that it will not be giving any specific date for the hearing. Earlier this month, the Karnataka High Court had dismissed a plea seeking permission to wear hijabs in classrooms in the pre-university colleges in Udupi. The High Court had dismissed the matter that wearing hijab is not a mandatory practice and it does not make up for religious practice in the Islamic faith. It also does not have any compulsory inclusion under  Article 25 of  the constitution.
