The month of Sawan has started from Thursday 14th July 2022, which will continue till 12th August 2022. The month of Sawan is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva.

By the way, devotees reach all Shiva temples throughout the month of Sawan for worship and darshan of Shiva.

But there are some such famous and historical temples of Shiva in India, where huge crowds of Shiva devotees gather as soon as the Sawan begins.

1. Kedarnath Temple

The Pandavas first built the Kedarnath temple. After which the temple disappeared. The temple was buried in snow for 400 years. 

Adi Guru Shankaracharya got the temple rebuilt in the 8th century. Behind the Kedarnath temple is the Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya. 

The temple was renovated by Raja Bhoj of Malwa in the 10th century and again in the 13th century.

2. Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples located in the city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This Shiva temple is built on the western bank of the Ganges River. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

Just as bathing in the holy Ganges river is given importance, in the same way it is believed that by visiting this temple once in life one attains salvation.

3. Pashupatinath Temple

Located in the Mandsaur district of the state of Madhya Pradesh in India, this temple is famous all over the world for its unique idol. 

The statue sitting here has eight faces in different postures. Pashupatinath Temple is situated on the banks of Shivna river in Mandsaur district. 

The idol of Shiva Bhagwan Shri Pashupatinath Temple in this temple is very beautifully built on a single stone.

4. Amarnath Cave

Amarnath Temple is situated at an altitude of 3888 meters. According to the legend, Shiva narrated the immortal story to Mother Parvati in this cave. 

Amarnath Cave is one of the popular temples located in Jammu and Kashmir. Every year devotees come to see the Shivling made of ice.

5. Mahakaleshwar Temple

Situated in the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, this temple is one of the most famous Shiva temples. This temple comes in 12 Jyotirlingas. 

Ujjain is called the city of Mahakal. There is a desire in all the devotees to see the Bhasma Aarti that takes place here. 

The idol of the deity Swayambhu Lingam is installed in the temple. They are called Dakshinamurti.

6. Somnath Temple

This historical Shiva temple in Gujarat, India is praised far and wide. It is believed that Chandra Dev himself had built this temple.

Among the 12 Jyotirlingas of India, Somnath Temple in Gujarat is considered to be the first Jyotirlinga.

7. Trimbakeshwar Temple

This temple is located in Nashik district of Maharashtra. The Punyasalila Godavari river originates from the Brahmagiri mountain near the temple. This temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Trimbakeshwar Temple was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao.

8. Lingaraja Temple

In this temple too there is a huge crowd of devotees in the month of Sawan. Lingaraja Temple is located in Bhubaneswar in the state of Odisha in India. 

This temple is believed to have been established by the kings of the dynasty. It is one of the oldest and recognized temples of this city. Lingaraja temple is believed to be dedicated to Lord Tribhuvaneshwar.

9. Ramanathaswamy Temple

Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu is the most famous Shiva temple in the country. This temple is built at that place. Where Shri Ram worshiped Mahadev to get rid of sin after killing Ravana.

10. Baba Vaidyanath Temple

Baba Vaidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand also sees a huge crowd of Shiva devotees on the occasion of Sawan. 

Shiva devotees walk about 120 km barefoot from Sultanganj in Bihar to Gangajal Kanwar and reach Baba Vaidyanath temple and perform Jalabhishek of Bholenath.
