Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-awaited work starring Alia Bhatt Gangubai Kathiawadi premiered at the 72nd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival where it reportedly received an eight-minute standing ovation.
The film is inspired from one of the very famous chapters of a well-known author Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai and it has been making waves ever since the release of its teaser last year.
The 800 people not only enjoyed the movie at the Berlin theater but also grooved to the dance and song sequences of the movie.
Bhansali spoke to film critic and reporter Subhash K Jha where he shared his experience at the festival saying that he initially did not plan to watch his movie again but when he saw the response at the 2022 mega film festival, he couldn’t help but still through the movie for the entire time.
He also said that the blessings of Birju Maharaj Lataji and his mother were with him and helped him work hard. The filmmaker further added that people in Berlin enjoyed the music, humor and anger that was shown in the movies. The audience at Berlin clapped at my song Dholida, said the director.
The film has received a warm response from the Indian audience as well. Critics are left impressed with Alia Bhatt’s performance in the movie and believe that she adds life to the film. The film is about the life story of Gangubai Kathiawadi, a woman forced into prostitution, and how she comes out as a string personality of Kamathipura. Kamathipura is a red light zone in Mumbai, also one of the biggest in India.
