One of India’s greatest tennis players Sania Mirza has announced that she will be retiring from the sport after the 2022 season. She is not just India’s but the world’s one of the most popular faces on the court.

The 35-year-old tennis star stated that it is due to injuries that she has taken this decision. She has earlier bounced back to the circuit after returning from a break in motherhood.

The former word number announced her decision after her loss in the first round of women’s doubles at the Australian Open 2022 on Wednesday. She along with her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok lost 4-6, 6-7(5) to the Slovenian team of Tamara Zidansek and Kaja Juvan in a match that lasted for one hour and 37 minutes.

In this particular tournament, Sania will be seen with Rajeev Ram for mixed doubles but she made it clear that it is her last season. The match loss came largely due to tons of unforced errors from Kichenok’s racquet. However, not putting the blame on anyone, Mirza accepted the loss and added that injuries led her to take the call.

“I’ve decided this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week, not sure if I can last the season, but I want to,” Mirza stated at a press conference post the match. She further added that there are a bunch of reasons and it was definitely not a simple call.

She explained that one of the reasons behind her decision is that the constant traveling is making her guilty of putting her son at risk. “That’s something I have to take into account,” she added. She also described how her body is wearing her down and even her knee has been hurting a lot after the match. Mirza has been playing in the professional circuit since 2003 and stayed at top of her game in either of the formats for 19 long years.
