Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma on Thursday became only the third batsman to score 5,000 runs in Indian Premier League. It was Chennai Super Kings’s Suresh Raina and Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli who achieved this feat before him.
With yesterday’s match, Sharma managed to score 5,000 against Kings XI Punjab which suffered defeat in the hands of the most successful IPL team. The skipper touched the mark as he played his 191 matches while the other two Indian players did it in 180 and 193 matches where the Indian skipper stands at 5,430 runs and Raina stands at 5,368 runs.
In this ranking, the first three spots are occupied by Indian players while the spot has been occupied by Sunrisers Hyderabad’s skipper, David Warner, who is yet to achieve this feat is at 4,793 runs in just 129 matches.
As far as the match was concerned, despite having a bad start, Mumbai Indians managed to get back on track and got the better of the team from Punjab. MI lost its opener, Quintin de knock in the first over itself which was worrisome for the team who is already struggling to fight an effective strategy.
Batting line-up of the Sharma-led team is explosive and yesterday too, it did not disappoint. Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and the captain managed to put a strong target to chase for Punjab.
KL Rahul and co had to score 192 to win the game which became difficult with leg spinner Rahul Chahar in the view who played a key role in leading Mumbai Indians to the victory by taking two wickets. Ultimately, the Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab by 48-runs. Both the teams stand on a similar ground as both of them have won one catch each but on the points table, Kings XI Punjab stands ahead of the boys from Mumbai because of better net run rate.
