Rescue Operations Resume At Gujarat Morbi Bridge Collapse

There 134 people have been killed in the Gujarat Morbi Bridge Collapse accident. 9 persons have been arrested on charges of culpable homicide.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is traveling to Morbi as part of a three-day tour of Gujarat, which is headed toward elections as a result of the bridge collapse over the Machchhu River that claimed 134 lives. 

In order to assess the situation in Morbi, PM Modi presided over a high-level meeting on Monday at the Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar. 

It was determined at the conference to celebrate a day of national mourning for the deaths on November 2.

Tuesday saw the resumption of rescue efforts over the Machchhu river. According to NDRF Commandant VVN Prasanna Kumar, 

“We resumed the operation with the assistance of our deep divers because it is feared that there may be some bodies on the river’s bottom.

Nine people have been taken into custody on suspicion of culpable homicide (not intentionally murder). Two Oreva Group managers are among them (Ajanta Manufacturing Pvt Ltd). 

The Oreva Group was given sole control over the maintenance of the bridge for a duration of 15 years, as per the contract between the firm and the municipality of Morbi.

After the Machchhu River suspension bridge collapsed, killing many people—including children—and pushing many more into the water below, Morbi was left to count its dead on Monday. 

By dusk, the death toll had risen to 134, including 40 women and 34 kids. At least two people have been reported missing, according to officials, even though rescue efforts are still ongoing. 1

7 injured people are still receiving care, while 73 have been released from the hospital.

The 135-year-old Jhoolto Pul suspension bridge, which had been closed for more than seven months for maintenance and rebuilding work, fell on Sunday evening, 4 days after it was reopened.

Under IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308, the police have filed a FIR against the –

“agencies responsible for maintenance and management” of the bridge “together with others whose names may emerge throughout the course of the investigation” (attempt to commit culpable homicide).
