Real Madrid had a truly awesome season in La Liga, which is the top soccer league in Spain. They lost only one game all year long! With just a few games left to play, Real Madrid was way ahead of every other team by 13 points. The next closest team was Girona in second place.
Since Real Madrid’s lead was so huge, it meant they would win La Liga as long as no other team could catch them. And that’s exactly what happened when Girona shockingly beat Barcelona 4-2. That huge win for Girona made it impossible for Barcelona or any other team to get enough points to pass Real Madrid. So Real Madrid won their 36th La Liga title, which is more than any other club.
Barcelona Takes Early Lead, But Girona Ties It Up Quickly
The game between Girona and Barcelona started with Barcelona scoring first just 3 minutes in when Andreas Christiansen put the ball in the net. But just one minute later, Girona’s top scorer Artem Dovbyk headed the ball into Barcelona’s goal to tie the game at 1-1. Then right before halftime, Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski scored on a penalty kick to make it 2-1.

In the second half, the substitute player Portu came into the game for Girona. And he turned into a superstar! In the 65th minute, he scored to make it 2-2. Just two minutes after that, Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez scored to shockingly make it 3-2 Girona!
Then in the 74th minute, Portu scored again with an unbelievable kick that went soaring into Barcelona’s net. The final score was 4-2 to Girona! Portu was so happy he cried tears of joy, calling it “the most beautiful thing” to beat Barcelona like that.
Girona Earns First Ever Champions League Spot
With their 4-2 victory, Girona not only helped Real Madrid win the league, but they also earned a spot to play in the Champions League for the very first time! The Champions League is the biggest soccer tournament for the best clubs in Europe. For a smaller club like Girona from a tiny city, making it to the Champions League is a truly amazing and unexpected accomplishment.
As for Real Madrid, winning La Liga once again just confirms how incredibly dominant and talented they are. With their experienced stars and top manager Carlo Ancelotti, they ran away with the Spanish league title in a season where they rarely lost. It’s the 36th time they have been crowned La Liga champions, which is more than any other club in Spanish soccer history.
