Rain… Rain in Gujarat, Alert!

Tuesday’s torrential downpour in Gujarat caused flooding in a number of locations. After the state received 300 mm of rainfall in the previous few hours, torrential rain caused severe waterlogging in the Rajkot, Surat, and Gir Somnath districts, forcing the evacuation of 70 people.

Social media images portray a bleak picture of many areas where streets are flooded, cars are submerged, and businesses are closed as a result of severe flooding.

In some districts of Saurashtra and south Gujarat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast sporadic heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days.

Sutrapada Taluka in Gir Somnath District, which recorded 345 mm of rainfall in just 14 hours starting at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, received the most in the state, while Dhoraji Taluka in Rajkot District recorded 250 mm in just 14 hours, with 145 mm recorded in just two hours.

With about 104 mm of rain falling in one day, Surat was hit hard by the rain. Additionally, the Junagadh district saw torrential downpours in some areas.

According to a statement from the state government, 43 of Gujarat’s 206 reservoirs have been put on high alert, 18 are in alert mode, and 19 have received warnings as a result of the significant water inflow.
