Rahul Gandhi hosts Opposition leaders to discuss strategy on key issues

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hosted a breakfast meeting with leaders of several Opposition parties at Delhi’s Constitution Club. The agenda of the meeting was to discuss key issues, including the Pegasus snooping controversy, the Centre’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, farmers’ protests among other matters.

As per reports, several Congress MPs and lawmakers from Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena, NCP, Samajwadi Party, RJD, CPI, and CPI-M attended the meeting. Furthermore, parliamentarians from J&K National Congress, RSPand KCM also participated in the meeting.

Opposition strategises plan

This is the second meeting hosted by Rahul Gandhi this week in an attempt to strengthen the Opposition’s unity against the ruling government on issues of farmers’ protests and Pegasus controversy during the monsoon session of parliament.

“India’s entire opposition is standing here. Why did we have to come here? It’s because our voice is being stifled in the Parliament. We have clearly been told that the government is not interested in discussing Pegasus in the Parliament,” Gandhi had told leaders during the meeting.

Started from July 19, the monsoon session of parliament has been marred with protests and disruption in both houses amid Opposition leaders’ demand for a probe into the Pegasus snooping row. Reportedly, parliament has functioned for only 18 hours out of the possible 107 hours in the first two weeks of this year’s monsoon session.

Last week, Rahul Gandhi hosted a meeting of several leaders of 14 opposition parties in a bid to develop strategies to raise demands for various issues on the floor. From holding a mock parliament to organizing sit-ins, opposition leaders are strategizing potential ways to step up attack on the government and demand for a debate on the Pegasus spyware row.

While the opposition has been demanding a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the controversy, the government has rejected all calls for a discussion on the issue in parliament.

BJP’s call for support

Earlier this week, Union Minister Rajnath Singh reportedly dialled Congress MP and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, seeking opposition’s support on the matter. However, Kharge urged the government to allow discussions to take place in parliament.

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked BJP MPs to counter and expose Opposition leaders attempting to disrupt the proceedings of Parliament over the Pegasus spyware matter. He slammed the Congress party for causing a ruckus in both houses and not allowing parliament to function properly during discussions.

Furthermore, he asked BJP leaders to maintain restrain amid opposition-led disruptions during House sessions. The statement was made by PM Modi during BJP’s parliamentary party meeting.
