Prominent Fashion Designer Rohit Bal Placed on Ventilator Support

Rohit Bal, one of India’s most celebrated fashion designers, is renowned for his exceptional work in the Indian and international fashion industry.

He was born in Srinagar and began his illustrious career in fashion design in 1986. His signature styles often include motifs like lotus and peacock, capturing the essence of India’s rich cultural heritage.

Currently, Mr. Bal is in critical condition and has been placed on ventilator support. He is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. This news has caused concern among his admirers and peers in the fashion world.

Throughout his career, Rohit Bal has been a prominent figure in the fashion industry. He launched his first independent collection in 1990 and since then, has been a favored designer for many A-list Bollywood celebrities and international figures.

His works have earned him accolades such as ‘Designer of the Year’ at the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006 and recognition at the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Awards in 2001. Bal also designed costumes for the popular Indian game show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.

Mr. Bal, who is 62 years old, has reportedly been struggling with alcohol addiction and has been in and out of rehab. His health deteriorated in November last year, leading to his current hospitalization. This isn’t the first health scare for Mr. Bal; he previously suffered a heart attack in 2010, requiring an emergency angioplasty.

In addition to his design prowess, Rohit Bal has been vocal about certain practices in the Bollywood industry. In 2018, he took to Facebook to criticize Bollywood celebrities and stylists for not paying for the outfits they wear.

He argued that the trend of expecting designers to provide clothes for free in exchange for publicity is regressive and undermines the value of fashion.

His post highlighted the disparity between the earnings of these celebrities and the designers who dress them. While he later deleted the post, it sparked discussions about the economics and ethics of fashion in Bollywood.
