Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on an official trip to Poland today. Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister who has visited Poland in the last 45 years. The visit is particularly significant as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Poland. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Poland was Morarji Desai in 1979.
Before departing, PM Modi expressed the importance of the visit he said, “I’m heading to Warsaw at a special time—70 years of diplomatic ties between our nations. India values its deep-rooted friendship with Poland, strengthened by our shared commitment to democracy and pluralism.”

During this two-day of visit from August 21-22, PM Modi will meet with the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
PM Modi will also address the Indian community in Warsaw. Discussions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including strategic partnerships, defense cooperation, and cultural exchanges.
European Parliament member Dariusz Zonski described the visit as “very important”. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stressed the historical ties between the two countries, recalling Poland’s support during Operation Ganga in 2022, which helped in the evacuation of over 4,000 Indian students from Ukraine.
This, along with India’s historic asylum for more than 6,000 Polish women and children during World War II, underlines the strong ties between the two countries.
