Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana: 1 Crore Homes To Have Solar Panels

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana.’ This ambitious plan aims to install rooftop solar systems in 10 million, or one crore, homes across India.

Modi shared this news after he visited Ayodhya for a special ceremony at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple. He believes this step will help reduce electricity costs for poor and middle-class families and move India towards being energy self-reliant.

The scheme involves setting up solar panels on the roofs of houses. These panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity. This setup is connected to the main power supply, reducing reliance on regular electricity and cutting down costs.

A typical one-kilowatt solar system needs about 10 square meters of space without any shade. However, the actual space needed can vary based on the efficiency of the solar modules.

PM Modi’s announcement follows his active support for solar energy. He has been promoting the use of solar power to help the environment and reduce electricity expenses. The National Portal for Rooftop Solar, launched in 2022, is another example of his commitment to this cause.

The ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana’ is especially significant because it targets a large number of households. It’s not just about saving money; it’s also about making India more independent in energy production. This move is expected to be a major step in increasing the use of renewable energy in India.

India has made considerable progress in solar energy, with around 73.31 GW of solar power capacity installed by December 2023.

Out of this, about 11.08 GW comes from rooftop solar installations. The government has been supporting such initiatives financially, covering up to 40% of the cost of setting up a solar rooftop system.

The ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana‘ is expected to be a significant step towards a greener and more self-sufficient India. It promises to bring solar energy to millions of homes, making electricity more affordable and sustainable.

This is in line with India’s broader goals of increasing renewable energy use and reducing dependence on traditional power sources.
