Ponniyin Selvan (PS-1) Becomes Biggest Tamil Film Of All Time

Mani Ratnam’s multi-starrer historical film Ponniyin Selvan (PS-1) has become the biggest Tamil film of all time. The film is based upon the great Chola dynasty.

Ponniyin Selvan, the first installment of Mani Ratnam‘s historical epic trilogy, has nearly reached the end of its box office run after earning just around Rs. 500 crores globally. 

Even if the movie is still playing in several theaters in Tamil Nadu, the sum will only increase by a few lakhs at most. The movie made 327 crores rupees in India and another 169 crores rupees ($20.70 million) abroad, for a total box office take of 496 crores rupees.

Ponniyin Selvan is currently Kollywood’s second-highest-grossing movie overall, only behind 2018’s 2.0, which took in Rs. 508 crores in India and Rs. 665 crores globally. 

But if only Tamil-language sales are taken into account, 2.0 loses to Vikram (Rs. 372 crores) by about Rs. 50 crores, making this the highest ever.

The movie reached a milestone of 200 crore rupees throughout its run, making it the highest-grossing movie ever in Tamil Nadu. 

The state’s business to date is worth Rs. 221.80 crores, and it will probably close at or above Rs. 222 crores, shattering the previous record by a sizable 20 percent.

The fact that the previous record was only achieved earlier this year and that this one is more than 50% greater makes it even better.

The movie did well internationally as well, grossing close to $21 million, topping 2.0’s $19 million in conventional markets and breaking other Kollywood records, including the first $6 million in North America, A$1 million in Australia, and £1 million in the UK.
