Can you imagine picking tomatoes from a plant? That’s simple! But the twist is – there are potatoes as well in the roots of the same plant. It is similar for ‘brinjal-tomato’ pairs.
In vegetable gardening, the days of growing just one type of crop on a single plant or in one place are long gone. Numerous techniques for cultivating nutrient-dense vegetables more quickly have been developed by agricultural sciences.
The agricultural sector is growing more quickly, and methods like genetic engineering, grafting, even hydroponics are becoming commonplace. While a range of vegetables have recently been seen being grown using these techniques, scientists are actively developing new strategies to co-grow various foods.
This year, scientists have developed a new method called “Brimato” that allows one to produce brinjal alongside these two vegetables in addition to potatoes and tomatoes, which was known as “pomato” earlier.

Do you know anyone who has ever considered the possibility of producing potatoes and tomatoes in the same plant?
The two ingredients that make up the bulk of Indian cuisine are tomatoes and potatoes. Thanks to a technique developed by the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR) in Varanasi, it is now possible to grow tomatoes and potatoes on the same plant.

“Pomato” is the name of this approach. Scientists at IIVR created it last year in an effort to greatly enhance both the quantity and quality of Pomato.
With the addition of a third layer to the plant, brimato is grown in a manner similar to how brinjal is formed on a tomato plant.
It is therefore feasible to grow potatoes, tomatoes, and brinjal next to one another. The IANS article claims that extra layers are used on the same plant to grow chiles.
“The tomato takes 22 days to get ready for plucking, whereas the brinjal grown using this technology takes about 25 days,” claims Dr. Anant.
The report claims that researchers are attempting to cultivate cucumber, gourd, and bitter gourd together with other vegetables.

Dr. Anant’s method required five years of research to develop these fresh, unique versions.
The best part about growing these vegetables is that they are ideal for households and can be grown anywhere, including in pots.
The growing technique for Pomato and Brimato, which enables two different vegetables to coexist on a single plant, was developed by the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), located in Varanasi.
According to Dr. Anant Kumar, the scientist who developed Pomato technology, said each tomato plant has the capacity to yield up to 2 kilograms of tomatoes and 600 grams of potatoes.
