Political Power Tussle Leads To OBC Reservation By Court Ruling In Madhya Pradesh Future Elections

Last updated on May 20th, 2022 at 04:32 am

There has been general uproar in the country as the court has entered into the political arena. Supreme Court directed reservation to be implemented for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category in the Madhya Pradesh elections, restricting it to 50percent reservation.

This directive has led to general uproar in the state and across the country as well. However, the saffron party and Congress have both found the move a welcoming one.

It seems that both parties had accused each other of being ‘anti OBC’ and are now claiming that the initiative for providing reservations for OBCs was taken by them. The apex court`s decision came on the basis of the Backward Classes Commission`s report of the triple test for reservation submitted by the state government to seek permission to implement the OBC quota for the elections.

Apparently, a delimitation exercise was already in place before a May 10 order. The court was never informed about this action taken by the State government. After observing the commission`s reports, the bench led by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar modified the court`s May 10 order directing the State Election Commission to notify the election programme for over 20,000 urban and panchayat local bodies in the state within two weeks, without waiting for the completion of the `triple test` exercise and further delimitation prior to the polls.

Undeniably, this move has been instigated by both the Congress and BJP as a power tactic to show eagerness to please a OBC population during the assembly polls scheduled in the state next year. As per the OBC Commission`s report submitted to the court, the OBC population in the parts of the state, such as Gwalior-Chambal, Bundelkhand, Vindya and central zone of Madhya Pradesh has nearly 51 per cent. Political analysts said that out of total of 230 assembly seats, the percentage of OBC voters are deciding factors.
