Political Parties Criticised Draft Report By The J&K Delimitation Commission

Various political parties, on Sunday, criticized the suggestions proposed in the interim report by the Jammu & Kashmir Delimitation Commission.

The National Conference (NC), the Peoples Conference (PC) led by Sajad Lone, J-K Awami National Conference (ANC), the CPI(M), and the Congress, expressed their concern over the Delimitation Commission’s draft report.

The report by the three-member J&K Delimitation Commission proposed redrawing of boundaries of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir.

The interim report suggested that the Kashmir division will get an additional seat in Kupwara. The report also suggested that the Jammu division will get additional seats in various districts. One seat will be given in the Kathua district, one in Samba, one in Doda, one in Rajouri, one in Udhampur, and one in Kishtwar.

The People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) will conduct a meeting on February 13 in Jammu to discuss the interim report.

The NC general secretary, Ali Muhammad Sagar, said, “The NC will not accept attempts to divide the people of J&K.The recommendations are bizarre.” PC’s Sajad Lone said that the exercise was an attempt to disempower the people of Kashmir. CPI(M) leader M.Y. Tarigami also criticised the government for re-mapping the poll constituencies.

Ankur Sharma, president of the Ikk Jutt Jammu Party, also criticised the proposal. Senior Congress leader, Tariq Hameed Karra, said that the panel’s report was designed to disempower a particular region.

Earlier, the PAGD party said that the delimitation exercise was conducted in an unscientific manner. The party also claimed that the proposal was divisive and not in the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. They also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s game plan was to divide the people. The first draft of the proposal also suggested reserving 16 constituencies for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
