A sudden meeting on Wednesday between NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the political scene in Maharashtra buzzing with queries. The meeting that was held at PM Modi’s office in Parliament, went on for about 20 minutes, where many issues were supposedly discussed. The meeting, a surprise for majority, was timed just few hours after the Enforcement Directorate had seized the properties of Varsha Raut, wife of Shiv Sena leader Snajay Raut, and a relative of Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi minister Satyendra Jain in an alleged case of money laundering.
“On what basis was action taken against Sanjay Raut? This is injustice. What’s the provocation for action against Raut – just because he is making some statements?” Sharad Pawar told reporters about his discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We will fight together in next elections…the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi). There is a stability, I am answering these questions for the last two-and-a-half years,” Mr Pawar said dismissing talks about turmoil within Shiv Sena – NCP – Congress coalition. Sharad Pawar was the force behind bringing the coalition together in 2019 after Shiv Sena broke up with its long time ally Bharatiya Janata Party. The NCP leader also underlined that there is no threat to the MVA government in Maharashtra. “MVA government will complete its full term. There is no threat to the government. After five years, we will form the government again,” he said.
Pawar also cleared the air about his leading UPA (United Progressive Alliance) coalition. The coalition led by Congress has Sonia Gandhi as chairperson. Mr. Pawar said of having no intentions of leading the alliance. “I am not ready to be UPA chairperson and we don’t want to disturb the present set up,” he said.
During the meeting, Pawar is also said to have discussed with PM Modi about the long pending approval of list of 12 names by Maharashtra Governor for the state Legislative Council. The government of Maharashtra has been pushing the list for Governor’s nod for more than two years now.
