India has been praised for its timely action of a close down and contain the virus from spreading into the masses. A huge displaced population from the villages has gone back. This has made containing the virus spread a lot easier.

Meanwhile the police personnel have been going out of their way to help the less fortunate and needy. Due to the corona virus lockdown, a lot of people have been rendered without salaries and jobs. These include usually daily wage workers and service sector staff.

Acting in the spirit of good Samaritans, a particular police station of Dehradun has gone out of its way to adopt a locality and ensure they receive rations for the time period of the lockdown. Under their initiative, they have decided to adopt one family per policeman, posted in Nehru Colony police station. Each such offier will ensure that its designated family receives ration and medicines.

Each constable is adopting one family and each sub-inspector is taking care of two families. Currently, between them, they are looking after 124 such families. Many such initiatives have been taken on by mid-sized entrepreneurs as well. Those who can afford are also using this as a great PR stunt. For example, sponsored by a private jeweller and a large media company is sponsoring vetran actor Amitabh Bachchan’s initiative to fund 1 lac wage workers belonging to the All India Film Employees Confederation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Additionally, after announcing the 21 day lockdown, the Indian Union cabinet declared a food security scheme. This would benefit around 80 crore Indians. Being called the world’s largest security benefit scheme, it will provide 7 kg ration per month for the next three months to the beneficiaries. People covered under the Public Distribution Scheme (PDS) will get wheat at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg instead of Rs 27 and Rs 37 per kg.

Cabinet Minister Prakash Javadekar has communicated in a press conference that people must not panic and hoard essential commodities as there is enough supply.
