Arun Kumar Sinha, the top security official of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed away Wednesday at a private hospital in Haryana’s Gurugram after a brief illness. He was 61.
He was serving as the Director of the Special Protection Group, which offers proximate security to the incumbent prime minister, former prime ministers and their immediate family members.
Since its inception in the year 1985, the agency of the Government of India has been providing security to its protectees at their office and residence, during local functions and even tours.
A 1987 batch Kerala cadre IPS officer, Sinha was the Additional Director General of Police (Special Service and Traffic) in Kerala before joining the Special Protection Group.
Just a day before his retirement on May 30 this year, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Modi approved the proposal to re-employ him for one more year.

Established in the wake of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984, the elite force is tasked with the duty to ensure fail-proof and zero-error security for its protectees.
According to its website, the SPG chief had penned down an important message, highlighting the need for constant changes in the organisation, in its recruitment process and in the training.
He said in view of the threats emanating from transnational terrorism, the force has to constantly strive towards technological modernisation and skill up gradation.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a trip to Jakarta in Indonesia for the ASEAN Summit, also attended by top officials from the US and China.
Thereafter, he will depart for New Delhi for the G20 Summit from September 9 – 10 and a bilateral with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the event.
