In a remarkable achievement that showcases India’s prowess in engineering and infrastructure development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first under-river metro tunnel in Kolkata on March 6, 2024. This innovative project, which connects Howrah Maidan to Esplanade, represents India’s unwavering commitment to improving urban transportation and providing great facilities for its citizens.
The Prime Minister marked this historic occasion by taking a ride on the metro, accompanied by a group of excited and enthusiastic school students. Before the inauguration, these young minds expressed their joy and eagerness to be a part of this momentous event, cherishing the opportunity to travel with PM Modi on India’s first underwater metro service. Their presence not only added to the celebratory atmosphere but also symbolized the nation’s future, which will undoubtedly benefit from such groundbreaking infrastructure projects.
The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section, a crucial part of the East-West Metro corridor, passes under the iconic Hooghly River, seamlessly connecting the cities of Kolkata and Howrah. This 4.8 km stretch, which includes the under-river portion, is a vital link in the larger corridor that runs from Howrah Maidan to the thriving IT hub of Salt Lake Sector V. In a remarkable engineering feat, the metro covers a 520-metre stretch under the river in just 45 seconds, a testament to the project’s efficiency and technological advancement.
The East-West Metro corridor is a true marvel of engineering excellence. Out of the total 16.6 km length, the underground corridor spans an impressive 10.8 km between Howrah Maidan and Phoolbagan, with the tunnel under the Hooghly River being a standout feature. The remaining stretch is an elevated corridor, showcasing the project’s versatility and ability to adapt to different urban landscapes. This combination of underground and elevated sections ensures seamless connectivity while minimizing disruptions to the existing infrastructure.

The Kolkata Metro is working tirelessly to commence commercial operations on the entire East-West alignment, connecting Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan, by June-July 2024. This milestone will not only revolutionize urban mobility but will also serve as a catalyst for economic growth and improved quality of life for residents. By reducing travel times and easing congestion on roads, the metro will foster greater productivity and promote sustainable development within the metropolitan area.
As India continues its journey towards sustainable development and urban renaissance, projects like the Kolkata under-river metro tunnel serve as shining examples of the country’s commitment to innovation and progress. This achievement not only sets new benchmarks for infrastructure development but also inspires future generations to dream big and push the boundaries of what is possible.
It is a testament to the nation’s resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit in the face of challenges, paving the way for a brighter and more connected future.
