PM Modi stresses on averting terrorism in Afghanistan as he speaks at G20

Afghanistan– Indian prime minister Narendra Modi asked for all the nations to come together to establish peace in Afghanistan. He addressed the G20 extraordinary summit on October 12 and said that the international community has to step in the matter to promote desired changes in Afghanistan.

He further stressed on making attempts that prohibit the Afghan land from becoming a source of ‘radicalisation and terrorsim, regionally or globally.’ The leader took to twitter to disseminate India’s intentions and hopes for Afghanistan.

The summit was held virtually consisting of all the G20 countries where they discussed issues impacting Afghanistan and neighbouring countries post Taliban takeover. He further asked for unhindered humanitarian assistance to Afghan citizens and also cater to the needs of women and minority populations.

The major talking point about the summit revolved around making sure that availability and practice of human rights under Taliban leadership. Afghanistan is not just a neighbouring nation for India and Kabul also has been historically dependent on India for various reasons.

Considering India’s position in Afghan matters, the UNSC resolution was adopted on August 30 under India’s presidency of the global body wherein, the need to uphold human rights in Afghanistan was stressed. Because of the geographical importance of the land and opportunities that Afghan soil can produce for foregn individuals, it was repeatedly stressed that its territory should in no way be used for terrrorism or radicalism.

Other than discussing human rights in the country, PM Modi also diverted focus on the hunger, malnutrition that the Afghan population is facing. He said that Indians can feel what the Afghan people are going through and to tackle it, a unified international response in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2593 is extremely necessary.

The prime minister also welcomed the efforts taken by the Italian G20 presidency to discuss the pressing issues in Afghanistan and ways to tackle the matter.

With the ongoing G20 summit for Afghanistan matters, there is another summit being held in Italy which is being attended by Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry. The Union Minister also tweeted about his meeting on Tuesday stressing on free flow of health services globally.
