Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with the highest award of the country, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, during his official visit to France.
French President Emmanuel Macron conferred this prestigious award on PM Modi as a symbol of the Indo-French partnership.
The Legion of Honour is given to individuals who have displayed exceptional merit in serving their nation in various capacities, whether civilian or military.
Foreigners can also receive the Legion of Honour if they have made significant contributions to France, such as supporting causes defended by the country, promoting human rights, freedom of the press, or engaging in humanitarian actions.
State visits offer an opportunity for conferring this award upon official figures, which further supports France’s foreign policy objectives.
PM Modi’s visit to France included a two-day state visit, where he participated as the Guest of Honour in the French National Day celebrations, also known as Bastille Day.
During his visit, he engaged in various diplomatic meetings and discussions. Upon his arrival in Paris, PM Modi met with the Senate leader and held talks with his French counterpart, Elizabeth Borne.
He also addressed the Indian diaspora at the La Seine Musicale, a renowned performing arts center in Paris.
Additionally, PM Modi attended a private dinner hosted by President Macron and his wife at the official residence of the Elysee Palace.
Notably, during his address to the Indian community in Paris, PM Modi announced a significant change in the visa policy for Indian students pursuing a master’s degree in France.
Previously, these students were granted a two-year work visa after completing their studies. However, PM Modi declared that Indian students will now be eligible for an extended post-study visa lasting five years.
This change aims to enhance opportunities for academic growth and career development, thereby strengthening the bilateral ties between India and France.
Furthermore, PM Modi highlighted the growing usage of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and announced an agreement for its utilization in France, starting with the iconic Eiffel Tower.
This agreement allows Indian tourists to make payments in Indian Rupees via UPI while visiting the landmark.
PM Modi’s visit to France has marked a significant milestone in the Indo-French partnership, with him receiving the highest honor bestowed by France, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.
