On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Arunachal Pradesh’s first greenfield airport, Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar’s Hollongi (November 19).
On Saturday (November 19), Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened Arunachal Pradesh’s first greenfield airport, Donyi Polo Airport, near Itanagar’s Hollongi, as well as a 600-MW Kameng hydropower project in West Kameng district, in a big boost to connectivity and tourism.
PM Modi laid the groundwork for the airport in February 2019. Brig (Retd) Dr B D Mishra, the state governor, stated that the airport will facilitate investors and medical crises, as well as students studying in other states and travelers.
The airport, named after ‘Donyi Polo,’ the deity venerated by the state’s indigenous groups, will realize a significant goal of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and upper Assam.
It will be Arunachal Pradesh’s third operational airport, bringing the total number of airports in the North-East area to 16.
Only nine airports were developed in the North East between 1947 and 2014. Since then, the Modi government has built seven airports in the North-East in just eight years.
The Airports Authority of India is developing the Donyi Polo airport at a cost of Rs 645 crore. According to officials, it will feature eight check-in counters and can accommodate 200 passengers during peak hours.
Donyi Polo airport, which would cover an area of 4,100 square meters, will be outfitted with all current passenger amenities. According to officials, it will include a 2,300-meter-long runway adequate for landing and taking off Boeing 747s.
