PM Modi congratulates Rishi Sunak on Diwali

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Rishi Sunak, who will succeed David Cameron as the next prime minister of the United Kingdom, to upgrade India-UK relations into a contemporary partnership on Monday.

Modi also extended his “special Diwali wishes” to the “living bridge of UK Indians” in a tweet of congratulations. Sunak, a conservative MP who has also held the position of exchequer treasurer, will be the first Indian-born British prime minister.

“Warmest congratulations RishiSunak! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the ‘living bridge’ of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership,” PM Modi tweeted.

Roadmap 2030, which was adopted in 2021 when Boris Johnson was the UK prime minister, is a framework designed to improve ties between the UK and India in a variety of areas, including the environment, trade, defence, health, science, and technology, and education.

After Penny Mordaunt resigned from the fight for the conservative leadership, Sunak, who will also be the first Hindu to hold the position, triumphed. Sunak, the first Hindu to hold the position, will succeed Liz Truss, who resigned last week after serving for less than two months, adding to the already severe political and economic unrest.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties also had something to say about the development. P Chidambaram, a former Union minister and seasoned Congressman, tweeted:

“First Rishi Sunak, now Kamala Harris The inhabitants of the United States and the United Kingdom have received the support of their populations and have been elected to powerful positions in the government. I believe India and the majoritarian parties have a lesson to learn from this.

Indians are making their imprint all over the world, tweeted Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the AAP and the Delhi mayor. My congratulations to Mr. RishiSunak on his appointment as prime minister of the UK. I wish him wisdom and courage to successfully lead the nation.
