Bharati Pravin Pawar, the minister of state for health, stated in a written response that such patients will now be able to go to any state in the nation and enroll themselves for organ transplantation.

According to her, the federal government is collaborating with the states to create “One Country, One Policy” for organ donation and transplantation.

In this context, it has been decided to eliminate the state residency barrier for patients needing organ transplants from deceased donors.

Soon, these patients will be able to register for organ transplants in any state in the US, she said.

The upper age limit of 65 years as criteria for registration to accept a deceased donor organ has been lifted, under the new government regulations.

The minister announced that anyone, regardless of age, can now sign up to receive an organ from a deceased donor.

The minister said that the 2014 Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Regulations have been published and that the government has passed the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act 1994.

According to her, the aforementioned Act and Rules establish a comprehensive consistent policy for organ donation and transplantation throughout the nation.

The Act and Rules, with the exception of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Meghalaya, and Tripura, have been adopted by all states in accordance with article 252 (1) and are applicable to all Union territories, according to the minister.

Answering another question, she said the government is taking many initiatives to improve awareness on organ donation in the country.

Among them are the three-tiered structure established under the National Organ Transplant Programme, a website (www.notto.gov.in), a 24-hour call center, and the dissemination of information by the National Organ Transplant Program, Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations, and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations.
