Papua New Guinea’s Marape Touches PM Modi’s Feet

The leaders of Pacific Nations enjoyed Indian Cuisine & Millets at the APEC house in Port Moresby. The lunch was hosted by PM Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India arrived in Papua New Guinea for talks with Pacific leaders, marking the first visit by an Indian premier to the island nation.

The visit aims to counter China’s growing influence in the region. Upon his arrival in the capital, Port Moresby, an unprecedented break of protocol occurred when Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape touched Modi’s feet as a sign of respect.

This gesture was widely acknowledged and praised by Indian politicians and commentators. Sambit Patra, the national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), called it a “remarkable gesture” and emphasized that it exemplifies India’s growth and influence under PM Modi’s leadership.

Jaiveer Shergill, another BJP spokesperson, also expressed admiration for the act, highlighting that it demonstrates India’s strength and respect in the world.

Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, among others, took to social media to express pride in having a prime minister who receives such love, confidence, and respect for India.

The ceremonial welcome and touching of feet by PM Marape hold significance due to Papua New Guinea’s customary practice of not according a ceremonial welcome to leaders arriving after sunset.

However, a special exception was made for Modi, highlighting the significance of his visit.

On Monday, the leaders co-hosted the third summit of the Forum for India–Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC).

The summit brought together leaders from 14 Pacific Island Countries, including Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, and others.

This gathering of leaders is a rare occurrence due to logistical challenges and connectivity issues.

The visit takes place against the backdrop of China’s efforts to enhance its military and diplomatic influence in the region.

Modi had expressed gratitude for the acceptance of his invitation by all 14 Pacific Island Countries to attend the FIPIC Summit, emphasizing the importance of the meeting.

In addition to the summit, Modi held bilateral talks with PM Marape and met with Bob Dadae, the Governor General of Papua New Guinea. He also had a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins.

The act of PM Marape touching PM Modi’s feet signifies a deep level of respect and admiration for India’s Prime Minister and symbolizes the growing ties between India and Papua New Guinea.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a lunch for world leaders attending the India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit in Papua New Guinea.
