A senior police officer who was in charge of the anti-drug operations in Lahore, Pakistan, is being accused of being involved in smuggling drugs across the border using drones.
The Deputy Inspector General of Lahore, Imran Kishwar, revealed that a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) is suspected to be involved, and the Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) has filed a case against him.
The way this worked was that drones were used to drop bundles of drugs in a specific location in the Indian state of Punjab.
After the drop, smugglers on both sides of the border would communicate and arrange for the drugs to be picked up. The payments for these drugs were reportedly being made in the UAE.
It’s also been found that there was someone working as a frontman for the police officer involved in this alleged smuggling operation. This illegal business had been going on for quite a few years.
To investigate this matter thoroughly, a committee of senior police officers has been formed. Their goal is to understand the full extent of this cross-border drug smuggling operation.
This issue came to public attention in July when a drone carrying a significant amount of drugs crashed near Lahore.
Around the same time, a government official in Pakistan mentioned that smugglers were using drones to transport drugs from Pakistan to India through a border town called Kasur.
The investigation uncovered that the senior police officer, Mazhar Iqbal, played a role in this smuggling operation. He initially apprehended a smuggler and seized a large amount of heroin from him.
However, it’s alleged that he released the smuggler in exchange for a bribe of PKR 75 million (around ₹2 crore). He falsely reported that he had only recovered a small quantity of heroin.

In a subsequent raid by the Anti Narcotics Force (ANF), the main smuggler and the DSP’s frontman were captured in connection with this cross-border drug smuggling.
The frontman confessed to working with the DSP in this illegal activity and claimed that it had been ongoing for several years.
Mazhar Iqbal, the senior police officer, has obtained temporary bail after the case was filed against him. The investigation is continuing to uncover the full details of this alleged drug smuggling network involving drones and corruption within the police force.
