The cold wave currently affecting North India, including our capital, Delhi. On this Christmas morning, Delhi experienced a very cold start. The temperature was as low as 9.4 degrees Celsius.
A thick fog covered the city, making it hard to see even at a short distance. In some places, visibility was reduced to just 125 meters. This fog wasn’t only in Delhi but also in surrounding areas of the National Capital Region (NCR).
The weather department, known as the India Meteorological Department (IMD), reported “very dense fog” at the New Delhi IGI Airport. This meant zero visibility for a while, which can be quite challenging, especially for flights.
Alongside the cold and fog, Delhi’s air quality was not good either. The Air Quality Index (AQI), which measures how clean or polluted the air is, was around 400. This is considered ‘very poor’. It’s important for us to take care when going outside, perhaps wearing masks or staying indoors as much as possible.
This cold wave isn’t just in Delhi. Neighboring states like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh also felt the chill. In these places, temperatures were mostly between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius, which is quite cold for our region.
Due to these conditions, the government has taken some steps. They’ve stopped all construction work that’s not absolutely necessary in the Delhi-NCR area. This is to help reduce pollution and keep the air a bit cleaner.

In the coming days, the IMD predicts that this cold wave will continue in Delhi. We can expect more fog, which might be moderate to dense. It’s important for us to dress warmly and take care, especially in the mornings when the fog is thicker.
Remember, in such weather, it’s good to check for the latest updates before planning your day, especially if you’re traveling. Stay safe and warm!
