Noel Tata: The New Chairman of Tata Trusts

The board of trustees of the Tata Trusts has named Noel Tata as its chairman, succeeding Ratan Tata, who passed away recently. This decision has been made after the death of Ratan Tata on October 9 in Mumbai, which led to a change of guard in one of the most powerful philanthropic organizations based in India.

A Legacy of Philanthropy

Tata Trusts, mainly the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust & their related trusts owns 66% of the Tata Sons, the group’s investment organization. It has been actively involved in poverty, improving health and education in India which is, in fact, the spirit of philanthropy that Ratan Tata is synonymous with.

The appointment of Noel Tata again maintains the line of continuity of the Trusts and at the same time, brings new leadership to steer the Trusts to its next phase. The transition is important to sustain its prestigious position in Indian philanthropy and corporate governance.

Who is Noel Tata?

Noel Tata is 67 years old and is actually Ratan Tata’s half-brother and has been associated with the Tata Group for quite sometime now. He is also the vice-chairman of Titan Industries Ltd and Tata Steel Limited and is the chairman of Trent Ltd, the retailing arm of the group and Tata Investment Corporation Ltd.

Noel has all the qualifications that one requires to hold this post; he has a Sussex University degree and INSEAD’s International Executive Programme under his belt. Ratan Tata’s successor is quite reserved, unlike his successor, hence the low-profile leadership.
