A distressing case of ragging surfaced at Haldwani’s Government Medical College, where senior MBBS students were accused of harassing their juniors.
Even though no formal complaints were lodged by the juniors, the college authorities acted promptly upon learning about the incident.
They levied a hefty fine of ₹25,000 on each of the 10 senior students involved, expelled them from the hostel for 6 months, and suspended them from classes for a week.
The situation came to light when the college guards, alerted by noises, discovered first-year students in the second-year MBBS hostel. A video recorded by the guard played a crucial role, as it led the Principal, Prof. Arun Joshi, to initiate an immediate inquiry.
Despite the juniors’ initial unwillingness to speak up, a disciplinary committee meeting was called, and the Anti-Ragging Committee took over the investigation. They found compelling evidence, including a video of a distressed junior student leaving the hostel in tears.
This isn’t the college’s first incident of ragging in the MBBS college. A similar incident earlier in the year led to the expulsion of three students from the hostel and fines being imposed.
In light of these events, the Uttarakhand High Court has issued strict directives to educational institutions to clamp down on ragging, holding college heads accountable for such occurrences.
In response, the college has taken a firm stance. The implicated students will only be allowed to rejoin their classes after a satisfactory report on their conduct is submitted by the warden. Moreover, the parents of these students will need to provide an affidavit, adding a layer of accountability.
The college’s proactive approach, despite the absence of formal complaints. The college is trying to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students.

By imposing strict penalties and involving parents, the college is sending a clear message that ragging is unacceptable and will be met with severe consequences. Their actions not only address the immediate incident but also work towards creating a deterrent against future occurrences.
