The Michaung cyclone, which brewed over the Bay of Bengal, has significantly affected Chennai and nearby areas. Since its landfall two days ago, the city has been grappling with severe issues, primarily power outages and waterlogging.
Let’s first understand why there’s no electricity. The cyclone’s intense impact necessitated the precautionary measure of cutting off power supply in many parts of Chennai.
This was done to ensure public safety, as the combination of water and electricity can be extremely dangerous. Waterlogged areas, especially, pose a high risk of electrical accidents, which is why the power supply in these areas remains suspended.
Now, addressing the question of why power can’t be restored till now. The main challenge is the extensive waterlogging caused by the heavy rains accompanying the cyclone.
Tangedco officials have clearly stated that they cannot restore power in waterlogged areas due to these safety concerns. They are waiting for the water to recede before they can safely restore the power supply. This is crucial to prevent any accidents or hazards.
In some parts of the city, like Arumbakkam and the OMR region, the situation is quite severe. Officials haven’t been able to enter these areas for inspection, let alone begin the process of restoration. We can understand the extent of the impact and the challenges in the restoration process.
The effects of Cyclone Michaung aren’t limited to just power outages. The city is facing severe waterlogging, which has disrupted daily life and transportation. Even institutions like the Jerusalem College of Engineering and public facilities like petrol pumps are inundated. This waterlogging not only hampers power restoration efforts but also affects mobility and access to essential services.
Transport services have been significantly hit. Although the Electric multiple units (EMU) train service has resumed from Chennai Central to Tiruttani, many other train services remain canceled due to the prevailing conditions. The suspension of flights and closure of schools, colleges, banks, and offices further indicate the severity of the situation.

The effects of Cyclone Michaung are profound, with the most pressing issue being the power outages caused by safety measures and hindered by waterlogging. The restoration of power is contingent on the receding of water, which Tangedco officials are closely monitoring.
We hope you’re staying safe during these challenging times. Let’s hope for a swift improvement in conditions and a safe restoration of services!
