Nitish Kumar’s Big Win as High Court Upholds Bihar Caste Census

Several petitions opposing the Bihar government‘s decision to conduct the socioeconomic and caste-based surveys in the state were dismissed by the high court today.

Between January 7 and January 21, Bihar conducted its initial caste survey. The second round was scheduled to begin on April 15 and last until May 15.

The caste census, however, had been suspended on May 4 by the Patna High Court. We believe that the petitioners have established a strong case that discredits the State of Bihar’s efforts to continue the caste-based survey process. Additionally, the state needs to address the issue of data security and integrity in more detail, the court had stated.

A social organization and a few individuals petitioned the high court after initially approaching the Supreme Court to request a temporary halt to the survey, which was denied.

However, the top court refrained from interfering and sent them back to the high court with instructions that their petition be heard as soon as possible.

The Bihar cabinet decided to conduct a caste census on June 2 of last year. Nitish Kumar has insisted that the exercise’s goal is to obtain a precise assessment of each community’s financial situation in order to support developmental efforts.

According to Mr. Kumar, we want to take this action in order to accurately estimate the financial situation of families from all communities, which will aid in determining what can be done to help them and their communities.
