Nick Kyrgios Defeats Medvedev & Moves Into Quarterfinals

Nick Kyrgios reached the quarter-finals of US Open 2022 after ending Medvedev’s title defense. Now he is going to face Karen Khachanov.

US Open 2022: Australia’s Nick Kyrgios pulled off a surprise by eliminating the reigning champion Daniil Medvedev during the round of 16 of the ongoing US Open competition. 

Kyrgios, who is in top form, needed four sets to win the match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York with scores of 7-6 (13-11), 2-6, 6-3, and 6-2. 

The Australian has advanced to the US Open quarterfinals for the first time with this victory.

The first set was a particular delight for the viewers as Kyrgios and Medvedev both gave it their all to win the match in the tie-breaker, which the Australian won. 

After winning the second set with a score of 6-2, Medvedev lost the following two sets to end his title defense.

Speaking of the encounter, both players held their own in the opening set before Kyrgios broke Medvedev of Russia to take the lead at 4-2. 

In response, Medvedev broke Kyrgios to fall behind 3–4. Both players kept pressing each other with difficult problems, and when the set came down to a tie-breaker, Krygios won.

The World No. 1 appeared to be mounting a comeback in the following set, which Medvedev won 6-3 after jumping out to a 3-0 lead and breaking Kyrgios. 

The Australian, though, had other ideas. In the third set, he had a 4-1 advantage and played for the set in the 9th game to win it 6-3. Kyrgios continued to dominate in the fourth set. 

Despite the World No. 1 winning the opening game, Kyrgios, the 23rd seed, continued to advance and eventually led 5-2 to seal a remarkable victory and advance easily into the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinal on Tuesday, Nick Kyrgios will now take on Karen Khachanov, a fellow countryman of Medvedev. 

In the round of 16, Khachanov overcame Pablo Carreno Busta by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
