NGT Orders Probe Into Debris Dumping In Sutlej River

The local entities are accused of dumping debris. Thus NGT (National Green Tribunal) has built a probe committee and ordered a complete investigation.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered an investigation into the dumping of debris in the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh, India.

The complaint was filed by Meera Thakur of Chintala village against the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL). She accused them of dumping debris from a tunnel construction project into the river at Sunni.

The NGT has formed a committee consisting of the Himachal Pradesh Pollution Control Board and the state forest department to conduct an inquiry into the matter, in a response to the complaint.

Meera Devi, in her letter to the NGT, raised concerns about the damage caused to the forest area due to the dumping of debris.

The NGT has instructed the pollution control board and the Shimla divisional forest officer to investigate the allegations and ensure compliance with environmental norms.

If any violations are found, the tribunal has called for curative and preventive action to be taken. The authorities have been directed to submit an action taken report within two months.

The chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is scheduled to meet with Haryana chief minister, Manohar Lal Khattar to address this issue.

They will also discuss water sharing in the Sutlej River and the imposition of water cess on power projects.

The dumping of debris in the Sutlej River poses a major environmental concern. Such activities can have very harmful effects on water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and the overall health of the river.

The NGT’s decision to investigate the matter highlights the importance of environmental protection and the need to ensure compliance with environmental regulations during infrastructure projects.

It is essential for authorities to take appropriate measures to prevent and mitigate the negative impacts of debris dumping and ensure the preservation of the river’s ecological balance.
