Netflix Ends Password Sharing In India, No More Multiple Users

Netflix has announced that it will impose restrictions on account and password sharing from 20th July, for its users in India.

This means users who share their Netflix accounts with others outside of their household will face limitations.

The streaming service views account sharing as a loss of potential revenue and had already implemented similar restrictions in the United States earlier in 2023, extending it to over 100 countries in May.

Netflix will begin by sending emails to users in India who share accounts across different households, informing them that one account should only be used within a single household.

Users outside the primary household will be asked to create a new account and subscription to continue using the service.

Previously, Netflix allowed more freedom for users in India, enabling them to share accounts among multiple households, like a group of friends or relatives. The new restrictions will make it more complicated for such users to continue sharing accounts.

To enforce these restrictions, Netflix will implement measures that require users outside the primary household to enter verification codes for access, valid for up to seven days.

Alternatively, users can connect to their primary Wi-Fi network at least once every 31 days. This will make it more challenging for account sharing across different locations.

Netflix will not create difficulties for primary household users who want to use their accounts while traveling. The company verifies devices within a household using IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity.

While users are being asked in India to transfer existing profiles to new paid memberships, Netflix introduced paid sharing options in various regions in May. However, it is unclear if any specific new paid sharing options will be available for users in India.

Netflix offers subscription plans starting from ₹149 per month for the Mobile plan to ₹649 per month for the Premium plan in India.

The Mobile plan is only for portable devices. The Premium plan of Netflix allows access to Ultra-HD content on up to four devices simultaneously.

Multiple user profiles can be added to any plan, and the restrictions will only limit the number of devices that can watch Netflix simultaneously.
