Neeraj Chopra’s Quest for Olympic Gold: The Javelin Star’s Journey to Paris 2024

High in spirits once again is Neeraj Chopra, the Indian javelin throw superstar, all set to take on the challenge of the Olympics after his gold at Tokyo 2020. Now he has all the arsenal to defend that title in Paris.

Olympic Glory and World Domination

Every Indian got to know Neeraj Chopra when he won the first-ever Olympic gold medal in athletics for the country at the Tokyo Games in 2020. He threw 87. 58 meters, and thus crowning her the champion. This did not satisfy his appetite as he secured the silver at the World Championships in the year 2022. Chopra resumed throwing in 2018 and in 2023, Chopra one better to be crowned World Champion after attaining a throw of 88. 17 meters.

Season’s Best and National Record

He is in great form this year, with 88.77 meters being the best throw by an athlete so far in the season, done at the Diamond League in Doha, which is also the current Indian national record. There were clear indications that Chopra was in top shape going into Paris.

The Competition: Chopra’s Key Opponents

Johannes Vetter (Germany)

Known for his mighty throws, Johannes Vetter holds the lead for this season with a throw of 97.76 meters, the second-longest throw in history. Yet, of late, he has been fighting injuries with his form uncertain.

Anderson Peters (Grenada)

I have a personal best of 93.07 meters and am a strong thrower across the board—but not very consistent minus this season.

Jakub Vadlejch (Czech Republic)

Vadlejch was in second place in Tokyo, right behind Chopra. His personal best in global competitions is 90.88, and he’s always a big threat.

Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan)

Nadeem is an arch-rival of Chopra across the border. He managed to throw 90.18 meters to win gold during the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He is capable of big throws on his day.

The best throws this year from them come from:

1. Neeraj Chopra (India) – 88.77m

2. Jakub Vadlejch (Czech Republic) – 88.38m

3. Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan) – 87.82m

4. Anderson Peters (Grenada) – 85.88m

5. Johannes Vetter (Germany) – No marks this season due to injury

Chopra has been a class above in terms of consistency and his performances even under pressure, but there always comes that one big throw in javelin that changes it all.

Event in Paris

The men’s javelin qualification will happen on the 6th of August in Paris 2024. Remember, athletes throwing 84.00 meters or testing in the first 12 positions further down the ranking will qualify for the final. Considering the kind of form and performances that Chopra has shown this year, he looks easily through to the final.

The real battle will be on the final scheduled for August 8th. Chopra has to defend his title in the presence of Vadlejch and Nadeem.
