Navjot Singh Sindhu takes charge of Congress Punjab unit, breaks ice with CM Amarinder Singh

Navjot Singh Sidhu has taken over the charge as head of Punjab’s Congress party unit, with the Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on dias along with him on Friday. The day followed weeks-long dispute and disagreement by the Punjab CM over party’s decision of choosing Sidhu to be part president in Punjab. The ice between two politicians seems to be broken now. 

In his first speech as party unit head, Sidhu indicated his modus operandi on dealing with affairs in the state. He said, “I will work shoulder-to-shoulder with the Chief Minister. I have no ego…The Congress is united today, contrary to what our opposition is saying,” he said. But he didn’t miss an opportunity to refer subtly to recent tug of war in state over his appointment. He said, “Those who oppose me help in my improvement.”

A ’tea party’ was arranged earlier in the day at Punjab Bhawan where Amarinder Singh and Sidhu met. This moment was likely the ice breaker between two after months of confrontation, hopefully putting an end to political turmoil in the state. Sidhu’s promotion was strongly opposed by CM and his party. Sidhu is replacing Sunil Jhakar as Punjab Congress President. 

On Thursday, Sidhu took initiative and reached out to Amarinder Singh inviting him to the installation ceremony of new Congress Committee in Punjab. CM accepted the invitation after two of the newly appointed working presidents of PPCC, Kuljit Singh Nagra and Sangat Singh Gilzian, reached his residence with a letter signed by 56 MLAs, including Sidhu.

Sidhu wrote to the CM, “I have no personal agenda, only pro-people agenda. Thus, as the eldest of our Punjab Congress family, I request you to please come and bless the new team of PCC.”
