MoRTH Sets Ambulance, Helicopter Facilities On Highways For Emergency

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has shared some concerning statistics: last year, over half of the road accidents in India occurred on highways. This resulted in more than 1,02,000 people losing their lives. That’s about 280 deaths every day on our highways!

Recognizing the gravity of this issue, MoRTH is taking significant steps to make our highways safer. They’ve placed 300 ambulances at various toll plazas across the country. These ambulances are there to provide quick medical help if there’s an accident. This is crucial because getting medical attention fast can save lives.

Another smart move by MoRTH is planning for pedestrian safety right from the start of new highway projects. They’re looking at how many people walk in these areas to decide how many overbridges or underpasses are needed. This way, people can cross highways safely, without risking walking across fast-moving traffic.

The most exciting development is the proposal to build helicopter landing sites at toll plazas. This idea is still in its early stages, but it has huge potential. If someone is severely injured in a highway accident, a helicopter can quickly take them to a hospital. This can be a game-changer, especially in remote areas where hospitals might be far away.

Another interesting initiative is the parliamentary committee’s suggestion to study road safety measures in developed countries. They want to understand why their highways are safer and apply those lessons here in India.

There’s a push to include road safety in school education. Teaching children about safe travel from a young age is a great way to instill responsible behavior. It’s about making them aware of the risks and how to avoid them.

These steps are all about preventing accidents and ensuring that if they do happen, help is available quickly. It’s a combination of better planning, education, and emergency services, all aimed at making our highways safer for everyone.
