Modi to Visit Russia for 16th BRICS Summit, Bilateral Meeting with Putin

India’s PM Narendra Modi to attend 16th BRICS Summit in Russia next week on October 22-23 in Kazan. This summit will be held under the presidency of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and will include leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The meeting is devoted to the topic entitled ‘‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security’’ to advance international cooperation for addressing the problems of global governance. This is already the second time PM Modi is visiting Russia in the current year, having been to Moscow earlier this year in July.

BRICS: A Growing Force in Global Economics

The BRICS, an emerging economy grouping, encompasses 41 percent of the world population, 24 percent of global GDP, and more than 116 percent of world trade. Formed as BRIC the group was renamed as BRICS when South Africa was included in the grouping in the year 2010. In the past few years it has been extended to Middle Eastern countries like Iran.

Russian President Putin put stress on its future saying that in the coming years most of the growth of the entire world economy will happens in the framework of BRICS. This assertion is based on bloc size and relatively fast growth compared to most of the western developed countries.

Modi-Putin Bilateral Meeting

In the margins of the summit, Prime Minister Modi will meet with President Putin on October 22. The invitation to this meeting was given by Putin in September, when he met with India’s NSA, Ajit Doval, in St.Petersburg.

Putin also shared his expectation concerning the upcoming visit of Modi noting the meeting as the moment when the further progress of bilateral cooperation could be discussed as the results in the implementation of the agreements achieved within the framework of the highest level of bilateral relations could be summed up. They are also expected to declare the possible future cooperation between India and Russia.
