Modi Strategy Is Long Term For Indian Agriculture Sector

PM Narendra Modi is not ready to retreat on his stand when it comes to agriculture reform in the country. Expressing his conviction in the need for Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) across the nation. Mr. Modi believes that this will help small and middle-size farmers get better access to technology, input, finance, and the market too.

Modi believes that the new amendments would help farmers get full access to what they deserve and not be at the mercy of the middleman who has been buying grains from the farmers and making the bigger buck.

Addressing the media via a virtual meeting, the thrust of his address was in concord with the government’s position that enhanced market access for farmers and incentives and opportunities for them to explore options beyond mandis would benefit the farm sector.  From his speech, it is clear that the Centre has no plans of junking the farm laws even if that means peace does not descend on the ongoing farmer protests.

Modi also indicated the future of agriculture would have the role of Research and Development (R&D) as much as the private sector players in the farming sector.  He also has plans to explore ways to leverage the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) scheme to take Indian products to global markets. These products, he has confirmed will be promoted in a cluster approach to increase the value of the products with the ultimate aim of increasing farmers’ income.

Mr. Narendra Modi spoke while addressing a webinar on the effective implementation of budget provisions for the Agri sector.
